ConocoPhillips Canada is seeking to fill the role of Drilling Engineer supporting the Surmont Oil Sands thermal asset in Alberta. The successful candidate will plan, design, and execute the construction of SAGD, delineation, and re-drill wells, and collaborate within a diverse multi-disciplinary team. Based out of the Calgary, AB. office, this role is on a 5/2 schedule and requires occasional travel to the field.


  • Participate in risk assessment reviews and develop action items to mitigate hazards

  • Provide cost estimates within the defined project scope

  • Evaluate service provider technical and commercial proposals and participate in the vendor selection process

  • Prepare directional plans and casing designs

  • Conduct hydraulics evaluations, torque and drag analysis, and drilling optimization studies

  • Prepare drilling programs and stick diagrams following the ConocoPhillips Wells Management Standard, local regulatory requirements, and Industry Recommended Practices

  • Provide engineering support during execution including WellView data quality assurance, drafting amendments and addendum to procedures, and following management of change protocol

  • Use real time data analytics platforms to help drive continuous improvement initiatives

  • Track capital spend by providing budgetary reviews during the execution phase of a project

  • Facilitate After Action Reviews to highlight key findings, accomplishments, challenges, and future opportunities

  • Participate in rig start-up, pre-spud and safety stand down meetings

  • Communicate with vendors and knowledge share with the technical community to identify innovative solutions to improve drilling practices

  • Provide technical support for global and regional procurement efforts

  • Participate in HSE discussions with operations and embrace ConocoPhillips’ strong safety culture

  • Conduct offset research to identify design strategies and potential drilling problems in the planning process


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering

  • Minimum 3 years of Drilling and/or Completions and Workovers related experience

  • Legally authorized to work in Canada on a regular full-time basis without restrictions

  • Proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 with all recommended doses of a Health Canada approved vaccine

Preferred Qualifications

  • Horizontal and thermal SAGD drilling experience

  • Familiarity with AER regulatory requirements and directives

  • Strong dedication to continuous improvement, safety and environmental stewardship, and business ethics

  • Great teammate with well-developed interpersonal skills

  • Solid understanding of the Landmark suite of design software programs

  • Registered professional engineer or member in training with APEGA
