Alaska Overview
ConocoPhillips Alaska, Inc. is Alaska’s largest crude oil producer and largest owner of exploration leases, with approximately 1 million net undeveloped acres at year-end 2023. The company produced an average of 195 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day (MBOED) in 2023. ConocoPhillips Alaska holds major ownership interests in two of North America’s largest legacy equivalent per day conventional oil fields, both located on Alaska’s North Slope: Kuparuk, which the company operates, and Prudhoe Bay. Additionally, ConocoPhillips Alaska owns and operates several fields on the Western North Slope. The company also has an ownership interest in the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System and owns and operates the Polar Tankers fleet.
Position Overview
The Alaska Business Unit is seeking a highly qualified and motivated individual for the position of Petrophysicist. As an integral member of multi-functional project teams, the Petrophysicist will support projects across ConocoPhillips' Alaska portfolio of exploration, appraisal, and development activities.
Your responsibilities may include:
Set a visible example in Safety Leadership Behaviors
Provide high quality petrophysical support to exploration, appraisal, development and reservoir management teams
Develop and update petrophysical models for sandstone and carbonate reservoirs across a range of depositional settings on the North Slope of Alaska, integrating and reconciling new data
Deliver petrophysical input for integrated field studies and lead integration efforts as needed to ensure properties and uncertainties are adequately incorporated in dynamic and static models
Develop and lead data acquisition plans for new-drill wells, along with managing log and core databases. Provide technical recommendations including value of information assessment for data acquisition plans that address key project issues. Integrate drilling results with sub-surface teams through detailed and timely petrophysical analysis
Be an active member of multi-disciplinary teams performing subsurface technical evaluations for exploration prospect maturation, exploration implementation planning + drilling, development planning + drilling, future resource development opportunity characterization, workover planning, and royalty re-determinations
Liaise with logging companies and in-house experts, to ensure proper logging data acquisition and execution is performed in accordance with ConocoPhillips’ best practices and are completed on time, within budget and with the highest levels of accuracy and control
Liaise with core analysis companies and in-house experts, to ensure core handling procedures and laboratory analyses are performed in accordance with ConocoPhillips’ best practices and are completed on time, within budget and with the highest levels of accuracy and control
May be required to act as focal point for logging + coring contracts and renewals, prepare scopes of work and perform technical evaluation for contractor selection in line with CPAI process
Display strong organizational and communication skills, making evaluations, interpretations, and assessments available to all project team members
Listen actively and invite new ideas for shared understanding, then influence and act to drive positive performance and achieve results
Document and present results and recommendations to relevant stakeholders
Participate in peer reviews with global petrophysics network to ensure innovative modeling techniques are applied to AKBU reservoirs
Mentor and share knowledge within AKBU and global geoscience community, including active participation in Petrophysics Community of Practice
Spearhead knowledge sharing of petrophysical models and tool selection across AKBU exploration and asset teams to enable efficient transfer of information as programs mature
Build effective and fit-for-purpose solutions based on available information and makes timely decisions that preserve COPA’s right to operate through safe and ethical practices
Build positive relationships based on trust and seeks collaboration across organizational boundaries to achieve goals
Basic/Required:
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
Bachelor's degree or higher in Petrophysics, Geology, Geophysics, Engineering, Physics or foreign equivalent
5 or more years of experience in logging technology, including log acquisition, processing, and interpretation
5 or more years of experience with Techlog, Interactive Petrophysics, Geolog or equivalent petrophysical interpretation software package(s)
5 or more years Well Operations experience (including wellsite geology and wireline/LWD operation expertise)
Intermediate level knowledge of petrophysical interpretation techniques working with both clastic and carbonate reservoir systems
Willing and able (with or without a reasonable accommodation) to travel up to 10% of the time on a yearly basis
Preferred:
Master’s degree or higher in Petrophysics, Geology, Geophysics, Engineering, or Physics or foreign equivalent
7 or more years of experience in logging technology, including log acquisition, processing, and interpretation
7 or more years of experience with Techlog, Interactive Petrophysics, Geolog or equivalent petrophysical interpretation software package(s)
5 or more years experience with evaluation of conventional sandstone reservoirs
Advanced integration skills with other subsurface fields and subject areas
Intermediate knowledge and experience of Arctic operating environments
Intermediate proficiency in deterministic and probabilistic petrophysical analyses to establish lithology, porosity, permeability and saturation models and their appropriate application to subsurface data
Intermediate proficiency in thin-bed analysis and complex clay analysis techniques
Intermediate proficiency in core analyses including porosity, perm, SCAL and core-log integration for reservoir properties
Knowledge of how key financial and quantitative indicators impact the business
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in an exploration and development drilling operations environment, achieve alignment among diverse drilling, vendor, and subsurface team stakeholders, and work occasional irregular hours tied to drilling operations
Self-starter with ability to perform with limited supervision and guidance, displaying innovative approaches to the selection of tools and methodology to effectively characterize reservoir potential
Ability to lead and work within a multi-disciplinary technical team
Delivers positive results through realistic planning to accomplish goals
Listens actively and invites new ideas for exchanged opinions, then influences and acts to drive positive performance and achieve results
Takes ownership of actions and follows through on commitments by holding others accountable and standing up for what is right
