Great Plains Overview

ConocoPhillips Great Plains business unit covers operations in the Permian, Bakken and Niobrara as well as the company’s interests in Wyoming, Utah, and the Anadarko Basin in Oklahoma. This diverse group of assets spans unconventional and conventional assets, as well as the company’s Lost Cabin Gas Plant. Combined, net production from the assets was 193 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2018.


If you are selected as the Health, Safety, & Environmental (HSE) Specialist, you will perform multiple and dynamic HSER-related activities as an individual contributor in partnership with our production operations, maintenance and reliability and operations support partners. The HSE Specialist is a unified member of the asset team and is essential to ensure a safe workplace for all partners. This role is responsible for identifying barriers to outstanding HSE performance and working within a sphere of influence to address these barriers by focusing on innovation, progressing the human performance culture, and promoting a learning and continuous improvement attitude in the implementation of HSER programs and procedures. This position is a trusted advisor and interpreter for local leadership regarding HSE Management System compliance, reporting requirements, and accountability within the organization for incidents.

The position is a rotational role nominally on a minimum of a 21/21 basis and will be residential during tours of duty. While on duty, the position will also occupy a 24/7 role as part of the overall Emergency Response Team.

Your responsibilities may include:

  • Maintaining a working knowledge of the HSE Management System requirements and agency regulations

  • Championing, developing, and implementing HSE programs and procedures to ensure compliance with procedures, Life Saving Rules and OSHA, requirements for facility personnel across all disciplines

  • Coordinating, developing, and presenting HSE training programs for facility personnel

  • Partnering with stakeholders to advanced S&OH performance across the asset and implement programs to succeed in complex conditions

  • Facilitating accurate and timely reporting of incidents and near misses including risk ranking of incidents utilizing incident reporting software

  • Partnering with environmental team to collect and inform on spill data for accurate reporting to agencies

  • Initiating, participating and/or leading incident investigations and learning teams to ensure root cause determination, findings are well communicated, and corrective actions are developed to mitigate hazards and prevent reoccurrence

  • Partnering with operations to utilize tools to inform the workforce of emerging trends identified in leading and lagging indicators

  • Interacting and serving as liaison with numerous internal and external groups including government agencies and public organizations

  • Developing and implementing a comprehensive Industrial Hygiene program, including coordination for annual sample plan, and supporting calibration, collection and shipment of samples

  • Participating in planning HSE&R auditing, including external audits, leading an internal BU or contractor audit, and/or acting as a subject matter authority for a Focused Audit

  • Supporting safety meetings by providing assistance, direction and resource materials as needed, to improve overall efficiency and impact

  • Supporting PHA and PSSR field commissioning walkdowns with focus on process safety concerns

  • Coordinating the HAZCOM program including chemical approval and training processes

  • Supporting compliance of annual medical surveillance programs

  • Managing HSE equipment and instrument inventory including appropriate calibrations, maintenance, and repairs as necessary



  • Legally authorized to work in the United States

  • Valid driver’s license

  • 5 years HSE experience in the oil and gas industry

  • 5 years of experience with HSE Management Systems

  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint

  • Willing and able to work a rotating shift (i.e. 21 days on/21 days off, 28 days on/28 days off, etc.)

  • Willing and able (with or without a reasonable accommodation) to perform/align with the following tasks:

  • Climb ladders

  • Enter confined space

  • Lift at least 25 lbs

  • Work in extreme weather conditions


  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Safety or related discipline or foreign equivalent

  • ASP, CSP, CIH or other certifications

  • First Aid/CPR or higher certification

  • Possess good working knowledge of plant operations including for compression and operation support activities and process safety experience

  • Previous experience in emergency response implementation

  • Possesses a high level of expertise in industrial hygiene including experience in field and record-keeping activities for chemical, physical and biological agents

  • Able to solve a broad range of complex problems

  • Well-developed planning and organizational skills including the ability to work independently, prioritize activities, meet commitments, and actively manage time and generally mange a heavy workload

  • Invites dialogue to gain a shared understanding and influences with confidence to drive performance and achieve business results
