Bakken Overview

The Bakken is a large shale play located in the Williston Basin, which stretches across portions of eastern Montana and western North Dakota. The Bakken is one of the company’s three key growth areas within its Lower 48 business unit, with a development area covering approximately 630,000 net acres at the end of 2017. The company’s activities focus on unconventional tight oil play development and production in the most prolific portion of the basin. Operational and capital efficiencies continue to improve in the basin through the use of multi-well pad drilling, completion optimization, facility design changes and data analytics. In 2017, net production from the Bakken averaged 65 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day.

Description

The primary role of the Optimization Operator will be to review the existing artificial lift (AL) performance of all wells in this category and adjust to improve operating efficiency. The position will also collaborate with operations multi-skill operators (MSO), specialists, leads and production engineering on significant changes and opportunities. This position will report to the Bakken Operations Center superintendent and will play a key role in AL efficiency.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Staying current on all safety trainings in My Learning, including computer based training (CBT) and class room as it applies to a multi-skill operator

  • Evaluating rod pumping performance on all wells in assigned area to ensure wells are pumping efficiently based on design and available production

  • Identifying configuration (downhole equipment) issues and work with production engineers to ensure correctness

  • Performing changes as needed within the Bakken Rod Pump Parameter Envelope and the utilizing the agreed upon pump optimization flowchart. Certain changes require review by assigned production engineer

  • Recording all changes made in field notes with a follow-up review date and document results

  • Responding to all field requests to review specific wells pumping performance, and follow-up with person making request on findings/recommendations

  • Spending a minimum of one week per month working with field personnel, including training as needed and current trends and optimization efforts. (MSO, field optimizers, specialists). Communicate with the foreman on area needs or requests

  • Working to ensure all personnel (engineering, field optimizer/MSO’s/specialists etc.) making optimization changes understand the documentation process in field notes as well as the follow-up process

  • Building SAP notifications for items directly related to optimization such as: no communication to RPC these notifications are then approved or rejected by operations

  • Participating in production and reservoir engineering route reviews to identify optimization opportunities

  • Working with production engineering and field operations on “pilot programs”. (Ex. dead band, fluid level, leveling plate)

  • Working with Williston Integrated Operations on tool development (data analytics, reporting). Examples of these: pump optimization/field notes/Spotfire

  • Continuing to seek and understand technology advances such as: VSD (Unico/Schlumberger), pump stroke optimizer, velocity string/dip tube installations, etc.

  • Continuing to review the Bakken Rod Pump Envelope as new findings are discovered and technology advances

Qualifications:

Basic/Required:

  • Legally authorized to work in the United States

  • 1 years of experience in oil and gas operations

  • 1 years field experience working with artificial lift systems (rod pump, electrical submersible pump, gas lift)

  • 1 years experience working with SAP and SCADA automation software programs such as Cygnet, XSPOC

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications

Preferred:

  • 3 years of field related experience with artificial lift

  • 3 years with Microsoft Office, Cygnet, XSPOC, SAP

  • Demonstrated leadership in promoting safe work practices

  • Excellent communication skills in working with multiple disciplines
